AU Trustee, Dr. Bessie Mae Holloway

Dr. Bessie Mae Holloway, a Mobile County educator, is Auburn University's first black trustee.  She was named by Governor George Wallace in 1985 to fill an unexpired term.  She was reappointed to a full twelve-year term in 1987.  Dr. Holloway is shown greeting Auburn graduates at commencement.  She earned a doctorate in education from Auburn, a master's from Xavier University in Louisiana, and a bachelor's from Alabama State.  Dr. Holloway became the second woman to serve on the Board of Trustees.  The first, Sue Fincher, served from 1975 through 1979.
