Rowdy Gaines is shown at the 1980 AAU Swimming Championships in Austin, Texas, the moment he learned he had set a world record in the 200-meter freestyle.  Gaines also held the world record in the 100-meter freestyle.  Swimming World magazine named him World Swimmer of the Year, and he was elected Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Year for 1981, an honor that had gone to Auburn track star Harvey Glance in 1976.  Gaines appeared a likely multiple winner in the 1980 Moscow Olympics, but the United States boycotted the Games.  Four years later in Los Angeles, he won gold medals in the 100 freestyle and two relay races.  Auburn finished second in the NCAA Swimming Championships under Coach Eddie Reese when Gaines was a freshman, and sixth, fifth, and fifth under Coach Richard Quick the next three years.
