| This group--Auburn's first official varsity basketball team--won three games, including victories over Georgia Tech and Tulane; lost by two points to the Columbus (Georgia) All-Stars; and tied the Birmingham Athletic Club, 14-14. The year was 1906 and football coach Mike Donahue also coached the basketball team. Under Donahue, basketball practice was a contact sport. "He never bothered calling fouls--said it slowed up the game," Charles W. Woodruff, a player on the first team, told the Alumnews fifty years later.
