Military veterans at API, unwilling to pay local food prices, formed a cooperative grocery store in 1946.  Their wives saved an average of 30 percent on food bills by shopping at the co-op, the Alumnews reported.  Confirming what the veterans had thought about the town's prices, a nationwide survey found that Auburn had the second highest cost of living in the United States.  Washington, D.C. was number one, the Plainsman reported.
