1916 Fashion for "Rats"

An upperclassman clipped a freshman's hair to conform to the fashion for "rats" in 1916.  One freshman that year, J.P. Fuller III, retained a fringe of hair that imitated Dean George Petrie"s natural baldness.  "My recollection is that the first time Fuller appeared this way in Dr. Petrie's history lecture, he was ordered to leave Langdon Hall and not return until his hair was cut correctly," said Alfonso Wright, also a freshman at that time.
